Tokyo 2020 Olympics Basketball: Complete Results and Memorable Moments Revealed

I still remember the tension in the air during those Tokyo 2020 Olympic basketball games, even though we were all watching from our living rooms rather than packed arenas. The pandemic created this strange atmosphere where every basket felt more significant, every defensive stop more dramatic. As someone who's followed international basketball for over fifteen years, I can confidently say these Olympics delivered some of the most memorable basketball moments I've witnessed, despite the unusual circumstances.

The United States men's team's journey to gold was particularly fascinating to watch unfold. After that shocking opening loss to France - 83-76 if I recall correctly - many people wrote them off. I'll admit even I had doubts after seeing their disjointed offensive execution in that first game. But what impressed me most was how Coach Popovich adjusted the rotation and defensive schemes. They went from allowing France to shoot 47% from the field in that first game to holding them to just 39% in the gold medal rematch. That kind of defensive adjustment at the highest level is what separates good teams from champions. Kevin Durant was absolutely phenomenal throughout the tournament, averaging around 20 points per game while shooting over 50% from three-point range in the knockout stages. His performance in the gold medal game, where he dropped 29 points, reminded everyone why he's considered one of the greatest international basketball players of all time.

On the women's side, Team USA's dominance continued, but not without its dramatic moments. That semifinal against Serbia had me on the edge of my seat - they were down by 12 at one point in the third quarter before storming back. What many casual viewers might not appreciate is how the WNBA's schedule compression that year actually helped prepare these athletes for the Olympic grind. These players were coming off what felt like back-to-back-to-back seasons with minimal breaks, yet they delivered incredible performances night after night. Breanna Stewart's versatility throughout the tournament was something I haven't seen since Lauren Jackson in her prime. Stewart averaged about 15 points and 10 rebounds while playing elite defense against multiple positions. The final against Japan wasn't particularly close - 90-75 in favor of the Americans - but Japan's silver medal represented such an incredible achievement for Asian basketball. Their pace-and-space system, built around three-point shooting and constant movement, was beautiful to watch even in defeat.

What struck me about these Olympics was how they highlighted basketball's global evolution. Remember when Team USA could just show up and dominate with pure athleticism? Those days are long gone. Slovenia making their Olympic debut behind Luka Dončić's historic performance - averaging 23.8 points, 9.7 rebounds, and 9.5 assists - showed how international players are now often the ones setting the standard. I've followed Dončić since his Real Madrid days, and seeing him carry Slovenia to the semifinals was one of my personal highlights of the tournament. The level of skill and basketball IQ across all teams has risen dramatically, which makes Olympic basketball far more compelling than it was even a decade ago.

The reference to Barangay Ginebra's situation with the 6-foot-3 Estil being available at No. 11 actually reminds me of how Olympic team selection differs from professional drafts. In the Olympics, it's not about who's available where in the draft order - it's about assembling the right combination of talents and personalities for international play. Some NBA stars struggle with the shorter three-point line and different defensive rules, while others thrive. That's why I've always believed Olympic basketball requires a different kind of evaluation than what we use for the NBA. Team USA's selection committee had to consider how players would adapt to FIBA rules, and frankly, they got some picks right and others wrong. Personally, I would have loved to see more traditional big men on the roster given the physical nature of international post play.

The most emotionally charged moment for me was undoubtedly the men's bronze medal game between Australia and Slovenia. Patty Mills scoring 42 points in what felt like a career-defining performance was basketball poetry. Having followed Mills' journey from the Australian Institute of Sport to the NBA and now leading the Boomers to their first-ever men's basketball medal, it was one of those sports moments that gives you chills. The Australians had come so close in previous Olympics - fourth place in 2016, fourth in 2000 - that finally breaking through felt like justice. The raw emotion from players like Joe Ingles and Matthew Dellavedova, who'd been through multiple Olympic heartbreaks, reminded me why I fell in love with international basketball in the first place.

Looking back, Tokyo 2020 might be remembered as the Olympics where the basketball world fully flattened. No single nation dominates quite like before, the style of play continues to diversify, and the talent pool keeps expanding globally. The games averaged around 85 points per team in the medal rounds, which represents a nice balance between offensive creativity and defensive intensity. As someone who analyzes basketball for a living, I appreciate how these Olympics gave us a glimpse into basketball's future - positionless lineups, elite shooting from every spot on the floor, and defensive schemes that require incredible basketball intelligence. While the pandemic circumstances were far from ideal, the basketball itself delivered in every way that mattered. These moments will be discussed for years to come, and rightly so - they represented the very best of what international basketball has become.
